Land Condition – Restoring and re-greening the outback
Restoring and revegetating bare ground country that has been barren for decades.

When land has been degraded.
Decades of drought and grazing has meant sections of land in Western Queensland have deteriorated and degraded into persistent bare-ground country.
This project focuses on the restoration of native grass cover across these bare patches. Improved ground cover is essential for land condition recovery, reducing wind and water erosion, increasing biodiversity for native species (birds, mammals, reptiles), reducing sedimentation of nearby waterways and reducing weed infestations by restoring native vegetation.
It can be difficult to restore land that has degraded into the lowest conditions, but this project has achieved promising results that we have begun to replicate across the Queensland section of the Lake Eyre Basin.
It is possible to restore barren land.
Desert Channels Queensland is currently partnering with landholders to facilitate revegetation efforts through land restoration works including:
- scaled ripping of bare land
- shallow brickwork furrows on the contours against water flow
- non woody vegetation (ground cover) assessments
- native grass seeding with coated Mitchell Grass seed
Our goal is to improve land condition across thousands of hectares of persistent bare country. We also assist with the adoption of land restoration techniques, and support technologies and practice-change extension that equips landholders with the tools they need to improve grassland condition now and long into the future.
