There is a growing need to enhance preparedness for natural disasters and their impact on biodiversity and natural capital assets within the Desert Channels Region.

The Australian Government has invited Desert Channels Queensland (DCQ) to develop a “Biodiversity and Agricultural Natural Capital Emergency Preparedness & Response Plan” that considers most likely natural disaster scenarios and the potential impact on nationally threatened species, ecological communities and agricultural assets.  The plan is currently in DRAFT form and we are inviting stakeholder and community feedback either in person or via the survey below.  Full Plan documents available here:
  1.    Mapping document … Individual asset map series
  2.    Emergency preparedness and response plan… Asset tables
Feedback will be completed by 5pm  Monday 16th 2024.

Desert Channels Queensland (DCQ) is inviting stakeholders and community members to provide feedback on its draft Biodiversity and Agricultural Natural Capital Emergency Preparedness & Response plan. Your input is crucial in enhancing preparedness for natural disasters and their impact on the unique ecosystem of the Queensland section of the Lake Eyre Basin.

This comprehensive plan is a proactive approach to addressing the increasing threats posed by natural disasters to the unique ecosystems and agricultural resources of the Queensland section of the Lake Eyre Basin.

The plan’s development was driven by a recognition of the critical importance of safeguarding biodiversity and agricultural resources for the well-being of both local communities and the broader ecosystem. By addressing the most likely natural disaster scenarios and their potential impacts, DCQ aims to minimize the disruption caused by catastrophic events and facilitate a swift recovery process.

Key features of the plan include:

  • Identification and mapping of biodiversity and agricultural assets
  • Analysis of extreme weather events and natural disaster susceptibility data
  • Preparedness, response, and recovery actions tailored to each asset
  • Integration with regional planning documents and lessons learned from recent environmental disasters

This project contributes to actions under the 2022-2032 Threatened Species Action Plan, Environmental Outcomes of the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT), and Outcomes of the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program.
